11-15-2009: Brian/KI4QOY has checked in from Germany with the following info and picture:

I finally got my Class E license to operate via CEPT here in Germany: DA6PDX

I made my first VHF contact on Thursday on Simpex (145.500 Mhz) while driving down the Autobahn just south of Munich. A German by the name of Bodo with Callsign: L9MFY.

He was on the 9th floor of a skyscraper in Munich and he suggested we try to chat via the Zugspitze Repeater on 145.725. It worked great and since the Zugspitze is just under 10,000' above sea level and can reach out to 200 Km, we had great communication.

I later chatted with DO1HGS who was having great comms on HF to Japan and Australia. He said I was the first US Military person he has ever spoken with who had a CEPT callsign.

How is everything going back there in Alabama?

03-17-2009: Todd/KI4DFC reports on the Saturday Mar 14th runs in Enterprise as follows:

Myself and Bob (AB9FR) went and helped supply radio communications for the 1st Annual Young Women's Club 5K run and 1 mile fun run in Downtown Enterprise.

Bob and I arrived downtown Enterprise about 7:30am and meet with the race coordinator, Melissa. The 5K started at 8am.

I went to the half way mark to relay back to Bob who was at the Start/Finish line. I was able to send reports of the runners progress through the race to Bob who relayed this info to the race coordinator. We did the same for the 1 mile fun run.

Melissa was grateful for us coming down and providing reports to her. She welcomed us back next year to help also.

Sorry for the short notice to all the other hams in the area, but I got a email from Melissa Friday night before the race. Hopefully next year we will get information concerning the races a month or so in advance so other hams can make arrangements to come out and help.

All in all we had a great time.

02-06-2009: Brian/KI4QOY has checked in from somewhere in Iraq with the following Email and pictures:

Gary,

Good to hear from you. I pulled up a couple of pictures that won't violate any "Operational Security". One picture is of me in the front seat of the Apache while taxiing out prior to takeoff and the second is of me standing in front of a Phalanx Gun (the white, R2D2 looking device in the upper left).

Overall, doing well. Flying a lot of missions and learning a lot. I'm looking forward to being back in Germany as well as coming back to the states sometime in September when we are finished. I'm hoping to swing up to Enterprise and will give you a heads-up before I get there so we can meet at Koffee Kettle or something.

Take care,
Brian (KI4QOY)

09-25-2006: Todd/KI4DFC reports about Amateur Radio Use While on Fort Rucker:
I just talked to a SGT Mortenson at the Provost Marshalls office and he stated that if Amateurs are using a corded microphone, similar to their Public Safety personnel it is acceptable use. They are trying to crack down on Cell Phone use while operating a POV or Military Vehicle. Cell Phone use is acceptable if you are using Bluetooth or a hands-free device.
