EARS Guide to QSO with the International Space Station or N1ISS
by Todd/KI4DFC on Mon 03-20-2006 KI4DFC, Todd had a QSO with the ISS: 18MAR2006 1408 UTC. The ISS crew use a Kenwood D-700 radio and operate on the 2m band. They use a split Dual band which is the easiest to use.
Uplink: 144.490 Just set your radio to these 2 frequencies and if you do not have a dual band radio just program the 2 freq's in memory and just transmit a CQ <callsign> on the uplink freq and switch back to the downlink freq to listen for the astronauts to respond. If trying to work ISS just leave your radio on the Downlink Freq and listen. Just about any 2m radio/antenna combination will work. I've heard of folks working the ISS with a 5 watt HT. Use the following link to see where the ISS is at the current time: http://science.nasa.gov/RealTime/JTrack/Spacecraft.html It seems that American Bill McArthur KC5ACR is trying to set a record for the most QSO's. So your chances to talk to him are quite good right now. He is working ground stations on his breaks from his duties on-board the ISS. Good luck and 73, KI4DFC |
