WA4WQW (Duane Garrison)
I was radio operator in WWll aboard the aircraft carrier USS CARD. When I was discharged in 1946, I said never again to CW. About 1960 got into CB radio, met some of the local hams and was talked into Ham Radio. I was first licensed was 1962 in Lawton, Okla. as WN5FVB (a novice with only CW privileges for one year back then) ... spent all my time on 40M using a 60 watt Knight kit transmitter I built and a used SP600 Hammarlund receiver. Upgraded to General before my year as a novice was up to WA5FVB. In 1964 I moved to Ft. Rucker with the company I worked for and back then you had to get a new call sign when you moved from one call area to another and I ended up with WA4WQW. When I left the job at Ft. Rucker I was an over the road truck driver and carried both HF and 2M radio in the truck with me. Spent many a mile on the road at night talking to hams all over the world on HF.
