Hams Shine Bright

The Blackout of 2003, which began on August 14th, is being touted as the largest North American power outage in history. Some early figures:

  • 21 different power plants (including 10 nuclear plants) shut down within three minutes
  • 9,300+ square miles in the US and Canada went dark
  • 7 different airports grounded planes
  • 1 million customers lost water service in Cleveland
  • 50-60 million folks live in the affected areas
This historic outage resulted in volunteer ham radio operators throughout the eastern US being called into service.

Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) organizations in New York City, Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo, Akron, etc. were instrumental in providing emergency assistance when most modes of commercial communications, including cellular phone service, went dead.

Hams in the Northeast took to the airwaves immediately after going dark by using rigs and repeaters that had alternate-power capability. In the first 20 hours of the blackout, the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club ran an informal 2-meter message net passing roughly 500 pieces of mostly health-and-welfare traffic.

Since many commercial radio and TV stations were knocked off the air, hams also provided valuable public service information via local nets such as where to get gas and which stores/restaurants were open.

In New York City, ARES members rode along with fire and emergency crews in order to provide much-needed communications assistance.
