Field Day VIP's

A contingent of ARRL Alabama Section VIP's traveled to ten Alabama field day sites this past June. They logged a total of 1177 miles throughout Alabama during the weekend event.

The field day sites they visited were Robertsdale, Mobile, Monroeville, Opp, Enterprise, Opelika, Lake Martin, Birmingham, Pell City and Fort Payne.

Santa and Buck Demonstrate for the VIP's

The following quote is from Alabama Section Manager Greg/W4OZK:

I'm proud of the Alabama amateur radio operators who invested their time and energy to participate in the Field Day event. I saw a large amount of activity, ingenuity and dedication which projects the amateur radio can do spirit. I'm hopeful that you learned many new things, made new friends and ate way too much great food just as I did during Field Day weekend.

Discovery Is Home

The Space Shuttle Discovery returned safely on Aug 9th with a picture-perfect pre-dawn landing. Discovery carried a crew of seven ... six of which are licensed hams:

  • Eileen Collins, KD5EDS
  • Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP
  • James Kelly, KC5ZSW
  • Charlie Camarda, KC5ZSY
  • Wendy Lawrence, KC5KII
  • Andy Thomas, KD5CHF/VK5MIR
  • Stephen Robinson
But let's give Steve Robinson a break for being the only non-ham since he made such a spectacular space walk to remove those nasty hanging chads from the heat-tiled underbelly of Discovery. Plus he would have been the main guy to repair a damaged thermal blanket (hmm ... wonder what a non-thermal blanket is) if that space walk had been needed.

While docked with the International Space Station, the Discovery crew worked with another pair of hams: Sergei Krikalev, U5MIR and John Phillips, KE5DRY.

Besides delivering supplies and equipment, Discovery crew members also installed the PCSat2 Amateur Radio package on the ISS. As for a little DX'ing, Andy Thomas conducted Amateur Radio contacts while Discovery and the ISS passed over his native Australia.
