NASA Receives Ham Assistance

Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and SKYWARN members have been instrumental in assisting local emergency management officials and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in locating and cataloging debris from the February 1st Columbia shuttle tragedy.

Due to the dense pine tree forests located in East Texas, ham radio (including Echolink) has proven to be the most reliable method of communications available during the recovery effort.

Federal authorities have even requested that every search team include at least one Amateur Radio operator in order to help keep the recovery efforts coordinated and organized.

Columbia's Silent Keys

The space shuttle Columbia did not include any ham radio equipment, but three of its Mission Specialist astronauts were licensed ham radio operators.

Packet Racket de Rick/N4JAG

TSU is not planning to close the Victoria APRS site, so we may leave the APRS unit in operation there. The trees have grown a lot faster than the antenna mast though, so we need to move the antenna to one of the towers.

We are looking into installing an I-Gate (Internet Gateway) for APRS at our ESJC location. This would involve another radio and antenna at that location.

We'll keep you posted.
