NWR - SAME
Lightning Flashes In 1994 the National Oceanic and Aerospace Administration (NOAA) began broadcasting coded emergency weather signals that identify the specific geographic area affected by the emergency. NOAA transmits these coded signals over National Weather Radio (NWR) using a technique called Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME.) The identifying codes, called FIPS numbers which stands for Federal Information and Processing Standards, should be programmed into your receiver according to the instructions accompanying the radio. While it will depend on a number of factors, it would probably be a good idea to include warnings for an adjacent county especially when located near a county border. Here are lists of Alabama, West Central Georgia and Florida NWR transmitter locations, frequencies, and SAME codes.

Tornadoes
Tornado Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that descend from thunderstorm clouds to come in contact with the ground. Most tornadoes in Alabama occur during two main times of the year. The Spring Severe Weather Season occurs in March, April, and May, and the Fall Severe Weather Season occurs in November and early December. They typically occur between noon and 8 pm. However, they have occurred in every hour of each day and night, so no time is immune from tornadoes.

Tornadoes have wind speeds that vary from as little as 50 mph to speeds in excess of 300 mph. They move with the thunderstorms that produces them with forward motions varying from nearly stationary to 70 mph. Most thunderstorms producing tornadoes travel from the southwest toward the northeast. (Courtesy NOAA/National Weather Service.)
